Here we focus on the acting in one of the most intense scenes in the play. The scene shows a moment in the story of Elise’s grandparents, Alice and Hans Herskovic, as they fled Nazi persecution in Austria during World War II (1939-45). An SS Officer accosts Alice at a train station. Will he realise she is an escaping Jew?

Scenes

This scene is presented from two different angles. One focuses on Kevin, playing the SS Officer, and the other on Shari, as Alice. Watch them one-by-one, or perhaps even at the same time. As you do so, think about the following:

  • What do you learn about the performance of the scene by comparing the two versions?

  • According to the actors, what needs to be done to get from one end of this production to the other?
